Genetic engineering or Genetic modification is when humans directly modify the original genome (DNA) of a plant or food or anything with DNA, with something other than that, like other DNA or synthetic DNA.
Doesn’t that make you want to eat something like that? When food is not natural why would you want to put it into your body? There is no reason I want to put something that is not made by nature into my natural body. I know better than to eat plastic or to drink poison, so why, oh why would I want to eat something that is not natural?
The real question here is why would anyone want to put something into my food that is not natural?
Traditional breeding methods is what they call it when they are talking about plants. They are then called recombinant organisms, and we have been eating them, because they have been sold since 1994.
Apparently the term transgenic is used instead of genetic engineering these days. These are things we must learn so that we know what is going on with our food supply.
If one alters the DNA of any organism, does that make the organism different? And does that mean it could then be harmful to us? I do not see how anyone should be allowed to alter our food supply until they know it could not harm us in any way. This should take many years before we would know the answer to that question. So…that makes me feel like I am being part of the big experiment here. And I do not want to be part of this. I will choose to grow my own food before I will eat any more of their GMO food.
We are being experimented on again by the companies doing the genetic alterations, and being led to it by our government.
This is really hard for me to stomach. I do not know about you, but it makes me want to run and hide somewhere from a government that would do this to its people, and unknowingly at that. It makes me want to grow my own food and shoot my own deer or something for meat if I choose to eat meat. I hear rabbit is good too.
In 1986 the tobacco plant was the first genetically altered plant and it was in the USA and France. In 1992 China followed suit and commercialized transgenic plants with a virus resistant tobacco. Then in 1994 Calgene commercially introduced the “Flavr Savr” tomato for a longer shelf life. Also in 1994 Europe commercialized the herbicide “bromoxynil” for tobacco crops, making it the first pesticide producing crop.
Right here in our country the Environmental Protection Agency approved the “BT Potato” in 1995. From Wikipedia I found out that by 2009, there were 11 genetically modified crops, (remember, that is food you eat ) being grown in 25 different countries. By area of the largest grown the countries were, the USA, Brazil, Argentina, India, Canada, China, Paraguay, and South Africa.
It wasn’t until 2010 that the J. Craig Venter Institute created THE WORLD’S FIRST SYNTHETIC LIFE FORM. They created a bacterium and they named it “Synthia”. They did this by creating a genome and adding it to a cell with no DNA.
Now that you know these things, what do you think about this?
Apparently now the arguments are…
1…“Should we know which foods in our grocery stores are genetically modified?”
2…“Should they by law have to label all GMO foods so that we can decide for ourselves whether we want to eat GMO foods or not?”
Personally I believe, as an individual and a person with a logically thinking brain of my own, I wish to make all the decisions for myself that I can, and not have someone else make decisions about my life and how I should live it, and that means especially without my knowledge!!!
Europe recently made the decision by law they must label the GMO foods as GMO foods. That is a good start. Maybe we can ask our government to follow suit.

Genetically modified plants are plants whose DNA is modified using genetic engineering techniques. In most cases the aim is to introduce a new trait to the plant which does not occur naturally in this species. Examples include resistance to certain pests, diseases or environmental conditions, or the production of a certain nutrient or pharmaceutical agent.
Herbicides, also commonly known as weedkillers, are pesticides used to kill unwanted plants. Selective herbicides kill specific targets while leaving the desired crop relatively unharmed. Some of these act by interfering with the growth of the weed and are often synthetic “imitations” of plant hormones.
Calgene: In 1996 Monsanto Acquires 49.9% of Calgene, creators of the Flavr Savr tomato in April and another ~5% in November. Monsanto first entered the maize seed business when it purchased 40% of DEKALB Genetics Corporation in 1996. It purchased the remainder of the corporation in 1998
