We need to discuss how to keep your brain healthy and alive as you age. This is something you need to begin doing before you age. What I mean is, before you feel the effects of aging.
I will explain some things about your brain and how it works.
2. Brain Health.
If you smoke I advise you to quit smoking immediately. However many years you have been smoking I advise you to quit yesterday. Nothing ages you faster than the sun, except smoking. The most dehydrating thing you can do is smoke cigarettes. You did not know that did you? The smoke and all the 125 chemicals put in the tobacco by the tobacco companies, take the place of oxygen flowing through your veins and to your lungs and brain.
There has been way too much hype about fat and how you should not eat it. Fat is bad for you they tell you. They are wrong. Even your brain cannot function without fat.
There are good fats and bad fats. Some of the good fats are in nuts and avocado. I know that sometimes people crave fats. That means you need to eat fat but do not eat the fried foods and other bad fats like animal fats. I do not mean to say that you should not eat meat, even though I do not believe we should eat animal meat. When you eat good fats like avocado, you no longer crave fats and therefore do not have to eat the bad ones.
There are many nut butters that are good for you these days. You can find peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, sesame butter, sunflower butter, and even hazelnut butter (with cocoa in it called Nutella and oh my it is good to spread on bread or just eat with a spoon) at your local grocery store or the healthfood store if you choose to eat organic which is exceptionally good for you.
Many people will eat sardines which are good for you. There is CoQ10, which is fat soluble, in them too. This means that CoQ10 can travel through your cell walls into your cells and give you it’s benefits.
CoEnzyme Q10 is very good for you. It is made by your body but your body does not make all that you need as you age.
CoQ10 is also called ubiquinone, or ubiquinol, which is one of the best antioxidants. It helps produce your body’s energy and is critical for your heart health, and the health of your gums. Your dentist could have told you so. CoQ10 is critical to the good health of all your tissues, your bodily organs, and all the cells in your body.
By now I am sure you have heard the importance of keeping the proper amount of oxygen going to your brain for good health. This is one of the key reasons we need to exercise.
You can also take an herb called Ginkgo Biloba. Ginkgo is a blood thinner and will improve on the quantity of blood flowing to your brain and to small capillaries therefore improving the amount of oxygen with the blood. People already taking prescribed blood thinners and/or SSRIs (antidepressants) should not take this ginkgo. However, if you have Raynaud’s Disease it would be helpful to take ginkgo.
Ginkgo has been used to help people with Alzheimers and MS because it helps with the memory and concentration in these affected people.
Ginseng revitalizes every cell in the body including the brain and would also be of help.
Eleuthero Ginsenosides in Ginseng have helped Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia also for convalescence, energy, and mental exhaustion.
Over the age of 35 your immune system begins to decline and the CNS (Central Nervous System) needs more help than before. We are susceptible at this age to Vitamin B12 deficiencies. Many doctors will give you Vitamin B12 shots for this. The B complex vitamins should be taken together. That is why they make the complex of B vitamins together and a daily supplement is appropriate to give you this support as you age. Stress is another thing that depletes your B vitamins. Even sound above a very low decibel level can do this.
Stress is very depleting to your whole body, especially your CNS and it seems to be getting worse daily for those in the workforce these days. Since the CNS is in control of your brain, you can understand how taking a B complex vitamin could help your daily life. Lowering your stress level in the main objective these days it seems.
Vitamin B complex is necessary for the relief of depression, anxiety, energy production and many other complex bodily functions.
I don’t believe that most people really have any idea of what goes on in the body on a minute to minute basis. There are literally millions of reactions happening every second in your body that make it work for you in the complex manner that it works. Just to move your arm or your finger takes so many reactions to make this happen properly. It would shock you to actually understand how this all works. Your body is dependent on you to keep it functioning in the manner it needs. What you put into your body is what you get out of it. It needs certain things and you must give them to it. Eating junk food will give you a “junky” working body.
You should really learn and understand the daily vitamins and minerals, and even exercise, needed to give your body the proper nutrients, including oxygen and muscle activity, that it needs to keep on working for you as you age.
We have been working on understanding all about the body for many centuries and still we do not know all about how it works. As they find out more about the functions they are continuing to educate the population about the findings but it is a slow process and hard to keep up with for many. We are doing good just to know about the basics when it comes to knowing what to eat in keeping a healthy body these days with the information pipeline being the ever flowing internet.
The science keeps changing with all the new information being discovered. They have changed the food pyramid recently to not include as many grains or protein, and increasing the amount of vegetables, which are your complex carbohydrates, and fruits daily.
Whole grains are more common in Europe than in the US. People here are very used to white bread and white sugar and white flour in general. It is not easy to get them to change to a more whole grain diet and raw sugar that is better for them. Most of the value of the grain is in the husk which is removed in white flour.
The husk of the grain is where the B vitamins are stored which make the whole grains better for your whole body including your CNS and your brain. Grains did not come into our diet for a very long time. We started as hunter gatherers and did not cultivate plants until later in civilization.
We used to eat properly and now we must get back to good diets to remain in good health. Since our farming technology is using pesticides and fungicides we must choose organic now to get real food.
More about living in better health as we age coming soon.
